Unfortunately there aren't really many dictionaries that fit your description, as it's a pretty small niche to fill. My recommendation would be a dictionary aimed at Japanese elementary school/middle school students. The other option would be to get an electronic dictionary with a jump function, and just look up words in definitions that you don't know already. It'll be painfully time-consuming at first, but you'll learn a hell of a lot (but if you don't know 500-800 kanji already this may be a bit too daunting). If you're interested in that and you own an iPhone, I'd recommend the 大辞林 application. If you own a mac, also be aware that there's a J-J dictionary built into your computer. Just open the dictionary application, go to the preferences menu, and turn on the 大辞泉 dictionary.

Thx for your detailed answer, however this is about Thai and not Japanese Anyway I bet through google your post will still be helpful for some people! I have a Thai monolingual dictionary already, however I have never learned the correct order of the alphabet and so looking up words is time consuming for me and I would prefer a electronic monolingual dictionary.
